Sport England’s national campaign to get more women, more active, more often returns with a bang today.
A brand new This Girl Can advert will be broadcast to millions on ITV during Coronation Street and Team GB hockey hero Shona McCallin is backing the campaign in Lincolnshire.
Shona said: “It’s all about finding an activity that you enjoy and have fun doing. Whether it’s a dance class or joining a local sports club, there’s always something we can do to be more active. Are you going to join in?”
The campaign was highly successful in 2015. Lincolnshire saw a 2% rise (approx. 6,500) in the amount of women regularly taking part in sport and physical activity (according to Active Lives survey results 2017).
That’s definitive proof that This Girl Can works – but Lincolnshire Sport is spearheading the campaign to make it even bigger and even better in Lincolnshire this time around.
Ewa Turner, a Zumba instructor from Lincoln, wants to encourage anyone who’s worried they aren’t fit enough to get started.
She said: “Basically the idea of Zumba is that you should be able to go into anyone’s class, you can just decide to join, and you should be able to have fun straight away. So get on the web, look at some of the Zumba dances, and you’ll see what fun it is!”
Sarah Bassett, who began a cycling course at the start of this year, is amazed by the results she’s seen in such a short period of time.
She said: “I’ve gone from never having cycled before at the start of this course, and now I cycle at least twice per week, in rain, hail or shine – and enjoy it.”
Tune into Coronation Street on ITV tonight to see the brand new advert or head to the This Girl Can website for more information.
